The building of Marble Hill House was started on 2 June 1724 when the Earl of Ilay engaged Roger Morris to ‘build the naked carcass of a house’. The neo-Palladian building was completed in 1729. Henrietta Howard, Countess of Suffolk and mistress of the Prince of Wales later George II, was a friend to both Alexander Pope and Horace Walpole who both lived locally.
