Who was she?

A row of terraced cottages in Teddington High Street bear a plaque with the name ‘Peg Woffington’. Who was she?

Peg Woffington was a beautiful and popular actress. She was born in Dublin and began her career singing on the streets.

At the age of 10 she made her first stage appearance in Ireland and in her mid 20s she came to London. There she was an immediate success.

She met and fell in love with the actor David Garrick who lived in Hampton Hill. They planned to marry but never did. Peg moved to Teddington.

Peg Woffington’s cottages

The cottages were built in 1759 and it is thought that Peg gave these to the poor of the parish.
