On Wednesday 22nd October, House Manager Ricky Pound visited Riverside Radio in Battersea to talk about the artist Joseph Mallord William Turner and his time living, painting and fishing in South west London. As a young boy Turner spent time with his uncle’s family at Brentford. In 1805 Turner rented a house, pavilion and land at Isleworth and painted on wooden boards from a boat on the river. Between late 1806 and 1811 Turner lived at Hammersmith Mall and in 1807 he bought land near modern day St Margarets where he would design his own house.

Ricky spoke about how Turner would sketch the local area in his many sketchbooks and how these would be used in the future as sources from which to create watercolours and oil paintings for clients.

JMW Turner and South west London will run at The Twickenham Museum until 24th April 2026.
