George Basevi was a pupil of Sir John Soane though, following a three year tour of Italy, Greece and Turkey, he freed himself from the influence of his master.

He developed an extensive practice, eclectic in taste, including a number of churches and, in 1840 he designed Holy Trinity Church on Twickenham Green together with Archdeacon Cambridge’s School next door.

He is, perhaps, best known for his design of Belgrave Square in London.

He fell to his death from the western tower of Ely Cathedral on 16 October 1845 and a brass plaque in his memory was placed in Bishop’s Alcock’s Chapel, where he was buried.

Holy Trinity Church was extended in 1863 to the designs of his pupil, F T Dollman.
